We often use this verse to state that if we put God first that He will give us great material wealth and all of the “things” of the world. It is not the worldly things that Jesus is talking about.
The prior two verses define what the “things” were: “Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.”
The “things” were food, drink and clothing; essential necessities for life. Paul later repeats this by saying “And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.”
Seek God and His righteousness first, it is even more important than basic necessities but when you do this your basic necessities shall be provided for.
